What is spay and neutering?

An incision is made near your female pet’s abdomen to remove their ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. In addition to removing their reproductive organs, the procedure also eliminates problematic behaviours like roaming, which they would display while in heat. For male pets, an incision is made near their scrotum to remove the testes. Behaviours like excessive barking and humping will also be reduced. Studies show pets who’ve been spayed or neutered tend to live longer lives since they are less likely to roam, which reduces the exposure to disease-carrying wild animals or accidents such as being hit by a moving car.

When should my pet have the procedure?

Our veterinary team will provide recommendations on the best time to perform the procedure for your pet. We’ll consider their age, breed and likelihood of fathering or mothering puppies/kittens.

How do I support my pet post-surgery?

This is a major surgery for your pet so it’s important to closely follow our veterinary team’s post-operative instructions. We’ll provide care instructions specific to your pet but general guidelines you can follow are:

• Ensure their incision remains clean and dry
• Monitor your pet for any changes like bleeding
• Make sure they don’t lick or chew at their surgical wound
• Try to limit physical activity like running or jumping
