Microchipping

Though it’s impossible to prevent your pet from getting lost, microchipping helps increase the chances of them making it back home to you. This small, rice-grained device is a form of pet ID, providing details about your pet and how to contact you. Microchipping is an important part of your pet recovery plan.

When should I microchip my pet?

You should try and get your pet microchipped as soon as possible. Since you can’t predict your pet wandering off or getting lost, microchipping provides them with added protection in case it happens. If your pet is returned to the veterinarian or animal shelter, a handheld scanner will detect the microchip. Each microchip is connected with a serial number that is registered to a pet recovery database. This provides your contact information so you can be reached to be reunited with your pet.

How does the procedure work?

We use a needle to implant the microchip under your furry friend’s skin, typically near their shoulder blades. The procedure is non-invasive and over in a couple of minutes. Will I need to replace it?

Once your pet has a microchip, it will last their lifetime. It’s unlikely you’ll need to replace it. However, microchipping shouldn’t be the only pet identification you rely on. Collars and tags are also great tools to use in addition to microchipping. With microchipping, it’s important to keep your contact information up-to-date in the pet recovery database.
